Scarlett Reunion 2023

Over the weekend my wife and I went to her family reunion. For the second year it was held at the Nicholas Gibbs Historic Homestead Site, who, by the way, is an ancestor of this Scarlett Clan. We start off with two agreeable sisters-in-law, the one on the right being sibling five.

My wife is surprised that I am takin her picture. She is a bit camera shy. She and her sister are the two youngest of the eight siblings.

Sixth sibling is listening incredulously to fourth sibling.

For an interlude, I show you my oldest son and his brood. Their mother and I were taking pictures simultaneously. Five were looking at their mother, two at me.

The oldest and youngest are nine and a half years apart.

I was so thankful to be able to interact with all of my son's children. I tossed ball with the two older ones, talked about dresses and cooking and running around with the two girls, talked about reading progress with middle boy, and exchanged smiles and howdies with two younger ones.

The family is very much into history in general and especially family history. They are very curious about ancestors and the like.

A little different perspective on the proceedings

Chillin' in the Corner

A respite from the younger siblings

Hanging out with grandpa, talking about railroads and baseball.

I asked her what she had cooked recently. "Gingerbread cookies," she replied without hesitation. I will assure you that she does it all on her own, which I find quite amazing for a girl short of 7 years old.

Back to the wider reunion, we have a brother-in-law probably telling a hunting story.

The patriarch and sibling number one is looking a bit tired out at 88. He still has quite the sense of humor though.

I can't tell if the yarn being woven is amazing, boring, or incredible. A son and nephew is listening in, too.

One of the daughters-in-law smiles kindly. Part of the family has four generations alive. I hope to see my great-grandchildren.

Sibling two sits quietly listening. It is amazing that all eight siblings are still alive.

A son-in-law laughing with a sister-in-law over who knows what family way of doing things.

When you have siblings spanning 24 years, some curious things happen. This niece is not so much younger than her aunt. In fact, there was one niece who was older than two of the siblings. Can you imagine being pregnant at the same time as your mother and delivering before her?

Sibling three and six like a quieter, more serious conversation, one having been a school teacher and superintendent and the other an Assistant DA.

Another of the nieces, yeah, you kinda got to keep up to know who is who.

Many years together

Two grandchildren/nephews who are very different but sat and talked quite a while.

What percentage of a reunion is talking about events long past and ones being lived out at present?

The hens did cackle a bit but getting along with each other is such a pleasant sound.

Grandma was trying to pull my two grandchildren close to hers for the picture.

The guys are cousins and the gal the center one's wife.

The two ladies are mother and daughter, the latter perhaps the youngest adult in attendance.

Two more sisters-in laws

The children sang some hymns.

Sisters

He was listening when I aimed the camera, but a distraction turned his head.

Knowing that all eight siblings can't last forever, there were sibling and sibling/in-law pictures taken. If they pass some along, then I will share them. It sure is a blessing for family members to get along. I hope to see all of them next year.

Under and Over

It was the little man's birthday. His Mamaw purchased and wrapped two LEGO sets.

He had really only built Duplo sets previously, but these were mostly within his reach to construct, with a little help from big sister. Picture instructions certainly help, too.

Being into Nancy Drew mysteries these days, I gave her ten mysteries of the collection she did not have that I found at a used bookstore.

I need a tripod and time exposure to do justice to the underground sights. You may see more attempts at phone photography at "Coolest Cave."

I think this the neatest passage in the cave, some 200 feet long, level floor, resounding walls, and resounding floor when pounded upon.

The skies did clear while we were "indoors". My son came with his inflatable kayak and my canoe. My son-in-law did a decent job of steering the whitewater canoe on a lake. It turns on a dime, running only as straight as each stroke provokes it to.

I was impressed with the inflatable kayak. The high-volume pump made it fast and easy to inflate, and it skimmed along quite well, particularly after my son added the bottom fin, an accessory for flat water. Then it collapses to duffle bag size for travel or storage.

At the far end of the lake is a dam...

and cascade.

On the way back I asked my granddaughter if she wanted to jump in. She didn't hesitate and I followed soon after.

It was a beautiful day all around and we regretted our time constraints. Still, the day was full of the blessings of nature observing and conversing with family. And that is good.
