Jones Falls

You approach Elk River Falls from the top, not knowing how big it is.

Particularly on a high flow day, this falls roars. This day was a medium flow day. The large pool at the base is an excellent swimming hole as the locals will attest in numbers on a hot summer day. In this picture I stand with my usual hiking partner.

It was a beautiful Autumn day with leaves at their peak.

Beyond the falls the jail is poorly maintenanced and rough for short way through rhododendron before you drop back down to the river and grass covered road.

A young married couple were also on the hike with us. She is camera shy so I don't have a picture of her.

I spy Red Maple, Sugar Maple, Chestnut Oak, Black Oak, Rhododendron, Mountain Laurel, and probably Birch.

Somehow it is easy to forget the pleasant, leaf strew and shaded, smooth and level sections of trail. We tend to remember the rough and difficult parts.

The falls is really a series of falls and cascades that drop over 100' down the side of a draw.

My hiking partner and I scrambled up to the falls. It splashes on the uphill side of a large boulder that must have split off from the face quite some time ago. It is nearly impossible to see it without getting wet.

It was a fine day out in late October. Life has been busy, and I just now got around to putting these pictures up. But there is no time like the present to thank God for the beauty of His Creation which reflects His own beauty, power, creative intelligence, and providential care. We are blessed to have Him as our Creator and God. He is a kind Savior and Beneficent Provider to those who know Him.
